Experiment 2 - Final Submission

 "THE MARKER"
BLACKTOWN INTERNATIONAL SPORTS PARK

"Monumental designs which are geometrically pure, memorable and drawn from traditional ideas,
yet evolving towards a spacious organic form."

5 Significant Images:

The "Marker" functions as an observatory tower, allowing for the users of the sports park to watch sporting games and to look out over Eastern Creek and the Morreau Reserve.

The landmark quality and memorable nature of the marker is highlighted through the rhythmic repetition of spearhead forms.

The skyward-reaching monument directly represents an electroliquid aggregation of the traditional Aboriginal spearhead and the coolamon.

It is situated on a natural platform covered with a recycled timber deck. The linear platform and stair is juxtaposed with the organic forms of the natural earth and the monument itself, emphasising it's grandeur.

The translucent, geometrically pure "skin" of the monument is breathable, and spacious, allowing for vegetation to thrive within the central spiral stair, as well as anticipating the outlook from the top observatory platform.

Extra Images:

The marker will not only generate public attention as a tourist destination, but the "Blacktown International Sports Park" text allows it to function as a billboard for the sports park.

The linear scheme of the large stairs and platforms provide a grand entrance to the monument.

The spiral stair's central column provides opportunity for a vertical garden stretching from top to bottom, on top of existing vegetation.

Experiment 2 - 36 Textures

Textures Used in Model:

LIGHT: Used in the outer skin of the marker itself. The light "mesh" skin allows viewers to observe the surroundings from all aspects, as well as letting the architecture "breathe".

MEDIUM: Used in the central pillar of the marker. The texture itself is representative of an abstract lattice which would allow for a vertical garden to climb up the central pillar over time.

DARK: This wood grain texture is used in the the spiral stair inside the marker. The material itself would comprise of recycled timber.

Experiment 2 - Research and Conceptual Development

"Monumental designs which are geometrically pure, memorable and drawn from traditional ideas,
yet evolving towards a spacious organic form."

BLACKTOWN - Aboriginal Heritage:

Aboriginal dot painting - Darug people, Blacktown's first inhabitants

Coolamon - Traditional gathering bowl
Aboriginal spears and weapons

Sports park logo - Inspired by the shape of a boomerang

Monumental Architecture:

Iconic structures have one thing in common, a memorable uniqueness of form.

A good test to determine the memorable nature of a building is if it can be drawn in 5 seconds

Below is a short video that inspiried the iconic nature of my marker:

Initial Concept Sketches:

The images above, as well as the newly formed Electroliquid Aggregation concept, inspired the main design of the marker. I decided that in order for the architecture to be drawn from "traditional ideas", the basic form should be derived from the Aboriginal heritage of Blacktown itself.

Through a study of "memorable" and "monumental designs" in architecture, I decided that the marker must also be a relatively simple form which is distinct, yet instantly recognisable, and can be distinguishable with a single line.

Experiment 2 - 12 Axonometrics

MIMAR SINAN:

He tried to obtain a new geometrical purity, rationality and a spatial integrity
in his structures and designs.

Respected the scale and ingenuity and delightful changes in view one
experiences accessing any one of the number of entries to the complex.

The superb quality of the exterior does not adequately prepare one for the
breathtaking spaciousness and sheer poetry of space and light within.

“I saw the monuments, the great ancient remains. From every ruin I learned,
from every build I absorbed something”.

Designs still draw from traditional ideas, but are evolving towards an organic form.
